Obama on Auto Jobs: Bragging, Denigrating GOP and Omitting Important Facts

There are a few things President Obama never fails to do. One, praise himself. Two, attack Republicans. Three, void as much of reality as necessary to accomplish One and Two.

For example, in his visit to Chrysler's auto plant in Detroit today, President Obama said:

So here's the bottom line. We've got a long way to go. But we're beginning to see some of these tough decisions pay off. We are moving foward.

I want you to remember, though, if some folks had their way, none of this would have been happening. Just want to point that out.

So, he praises himself and attempts to deride Republicans in one breath. I think we can pretty much all see through this one.

But Obama ignores the bigger part of the story. And so do liberals who praise him.

The problem is that Republicans weren't wrong to deride the auto bailouts as unnecessary and potentially harmful to the economy. Yes, Chrysler is going to keep its plant open for two more years and add 900 jobs. Great.

But, of all American auto companies, which is flourishing during this time?

Hint, it's the one that refused the government bailout.

Yes, Ford is doing great right now. It is the true success story. And if private industry was running GM and Chrysler, instead of the government, those companies might be doing better too.

How much taxpayer money was needed to save those 900 Chrysler jobs? Was it worth it? Wouldn't we be in better shape if they had gone the way of Ford instead of the way of government?

What Judge Bolton Got Wrong

Arizona District Court Judge Susan Bolton ordered a preliminary injunction against the enactment of several provisions of Arizona's immigration law known as SB 1070.

In doing so, the Judge determined that the United States had shown a likelihood of success on the merits that the law (or at least the best provisions of it) was preempted by federal law.

However, the Judge's decision is based mostly on Hines v. Davidowitz, a 69-year old case in which the Supreme Court found that Pennsylvania's alien registration law was preempted by the Federal Alien Registration Act. There, the state law conflicted with federal law, and the Federal government is granted the authority to regulate the registration of aliens by the U.S. Constitution.

But the law in Arizona does not deal with the registration of aliens. They only deal with determining the immigration status of people. As such, the Supreme Court case from 1941 is not directly on point.

In fact, the court in that case stated that it was "expressly leaving open all of appellees' other contentions, including the argument that the federal power in this field, whether exercised or unexercised, is exclusive." Instead, the Court was merely answering the question "of the respective powers of state and national governments in the regulation of aliens as such, and a determination of whether Congress has, by its action, foreclosed enforcement of Pennsylvania's registration law."

While the District court in the case of SB 1070 quoted only a portion of the following passage, reading it in whole connotes the very specific situation for which it was written:

Having the constitutional authority so to do, [Congress] has provided a standard for alien registration in a single integrated and all-embracing system in order to obtain the information deemed to be desirable in connection with aliens. When it made this addition to its uniform naturalization and immigration laws, it plainly manifested a purpose to do so in such a way as to protect the personal liberties of law-abiding aliens through one uniform national registration system, and to leave them free from the possibility of inquisitorial practices and police surveillance that might not only affect our international relations, but might also generate the very disloyalty which the law has intended guarding against. Under these circumstances, the Pennsylvania Act cannot be enforced.

Saying that Congress preempts state registration laws by creating its own registration law is a completely different thing than saying that states are preempted from regulating people within their borders.

In addition, the Supreme Court has held in such cases as Grahama v. Richardson and Bernal v. Fainter that states can create laws that discriminate against even legal aliens, so long as those laws meet the "strict scrutiny" test of constitutionality. As such, where Judge Bolton cautions against "imposing burdens on lawfully-present aliens," as she claims SB 1070 will do, she fails to engage in the type of analysis required to determine the constitutionality of such a law.

The biggest problem for Arizona is that the case will be appealed to the Ninth Circuit, the most liberal of all circuits. But all is not last, as the Ninth Circuit upheld an Arizona law in 2008 that required all businesses to determine the immigration status of employees.

As Governor Brewer stated, the battle is far from over. Judge Bolton's reliance on a 69-year-old law that is not directly on point raises serious questions as to whether her ruling will stand.

What a Relief - 2010 Deficit will be ONLY $1.47 Trillion

Remember when Bush was criticized for his out of control spending? Nancy Pelosi called it dangerous and unpatriotic back in 2006 (when the deficit was about $200 billion). But with two straight years of $1.4 trillion deficits (7 times larger than the "dangerous" deficit and nearly 4 times larger than Bush's largest deficit), Pelosi seems as happy as a pig in mud.

The shocking thing is that the deficits aren't just records, they dwarf anything that has ever happened before. How can ANYONE believe that this is sustainable?

Despite growing opposition the Democratic ranks, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Nancy Pelosi went on the offensive against the Bush tax cuts today.

Interestingly, Pelosi had the chutzpah to say that the tax cuts should expire because they added to the defecit and did not create jobs.

First, when the tax cuts went into effect, federal revenues went up. So, that actually lowered the deficit.

Second, if adding to the deficit and not creating jobs is the benchmark, shouldn't we repeal everything that Obama has passed during his term?

This comes as Senators Kent Conrad and Joe Lieberman argue for extending the cuts in light of the fragile state of the economy.

Democrats have mentioned the possibility of extending the tax cuts for the middle class. Of course they should do that. But as Democrat Congressman Gerry Connolly says, "The top 5% of earners generate 30% of consumer spending." Tax increases for "the wealthy" will significantly impair that, which is the worst thing to do for the economy.

Cap and Tax Dead (for now)

Senate Democrats have pulled the massive climate reform bill off the table, admitting that they don't have enough votes to get the measure passed.

This is obviously great news, as the measure would have created huge new energy taxes on Americans and businesses. And since the evidence continues to mount against the existence of man-caused global warming, one has to wonder what the bill would have accomplished.

Laughably (and predictably), Senator Harry Reid blamed Republicans for blocking the bill. That line has gotten so old, you have to wonder why the Democrats keep trotting it out. Here, the Democrats were themselves divided over the bill.

But, Obama's second-biggest policy goal behind healthcare is not totally dead. As Charles Krauthammer warns, beware a lame-duck Congress if Republicans do take control in November. With nothing to lose for many of thos voted out of office, the time may come to go out in a blaze of liberal glory, passing cap and tax and a host of other far-left goals.

But, that is far down the road. And for the moment, we can appreciate the fact that Obama's political capital is so low, he cannot pass one of his signature initiatives.

President Obama claims to be "amused" by all the tea party protests and says that the protesters should be "thanking him."

I am starting to like the idea of Democrats making light of the groundswell against them. Part of the reason Republicans dominated elections in 1994 is that the Democrats did not realize the size of the threat until it was too late.

There was some concern that this year would be different because Democrats had over a year of warning.

But the belittling and marginalizing by Obama and the Democrats continues unabated, in the wake of Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts and terrible poll numbers for Democrats all across the country.

And this will likely be a good thing. The more they put blinders on, and try to convince each other that the uprising is small and non-threatening, the less they will prepare for the intense fight that is coming this election season.

So keep mocking, Mr. President.

So Much for Being Above the Political Process

Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, at age 90, is still going strong on the court. But, he wants to make sure that when he goes, a liberal will replace him.

So, he announced this weekend that he will retire during Barack Obama's presidency.

The Supreme Court was set up to be above the political process. Justices are appointed (not elected) and serve life terms, so they never have to worry about elections. It was designed to let them be impartial arbiters of Constitutional intent.

But let's be real. Does anyone believe that is the case? Of course not - they almost always have a political ideology and stick to it. Which is why Stevens has to retire soon. He can't risk Obama being a one-term president and then allowing a Republican to fill his seat. He even takes a risk waiting til 2012 and seeing what happens. If Obama loses, and Republicans have at least 40 seats, they will just filibuster and wait for the Republican president in 2013 to make a new nomination.

So, Stevens has to go soon to make sure a liberal president gets to appoint a liberal nominee to take the seat. And the wheel goes round...

A Philadelphia man was arrested Monday for posting death threats on YouTube against House Minority Whip Eric Cantor.

The best part of the story is that "The Department of Justice takes threats against government officials seriously."

Since there have been no arrests for anyone "threatening" Democrat leaders, despite the Justice Department taking such threats seriously, you really have to wonder if such threats happened.

Obama's Broken Promises

I have to admit though, I am glad he broke some of them - like closing Guantanamo Bay within a year, having troops out of Iraq within 16 months, signing the Freedom of Choice Act and opposing nuclear energy.

On the other hand, with most of the other broken promises, my guess is that he never intended to keep any of them.

Massive Job Losses on the Horizon

School districts across the country will be laying off teachers and staff in the coming months. For example, Los Angeles Unified plans to cut 5200 jobs. 93% of New Jersey school districts will conduct layoffs. 8500 teachers will likely lose their jobs in New York. And these cuts are playing out all across the country.

This statistics are unfortunate for the teachers involved. But they are also interesting for another reason.

Taking Los Angeles Unified as an example, the school district had planned to lay off over 7000 employees last year. But an influx of funds from the stimulus bill allowed the district to keep all but 2000 employed. One year later, there is no more stimulus money for the schools and so the remaining employees will be let go in 2010 instead.

So, the interesting question is: will President Obama reduce the calculation on the number of jobs "saved" by the stimulus bill? If a job is only extended for a year, is the job "saved?" I think I know how the people laid off would answer that question.

The Arrogance is Astounding

That's what President Obama told Congressional Republicans about their intent to repeal and replace ObamaCare.

We already knew Obama was completely full of himself, so this is just one more brick in the wall.

Hopefully, Obama's bravado will push Republicans along even further to seeking to repeal and replace the bill. Apparently there is already some concern in Washington that seeking to repeal the bill will be viewed poorly by the public.

But, if this CBS poll is any indication, most people want the Republicans to repeal the bill - and that includes 41% of Democrats asked.

So, let's hope the GOP does take Obama's advice. Go for it!

Obama Campaign Continues

Campaigner-in-Chief Obama just can't let up. He spent the past year trying to sell ObamaCare, and the more he talked, the more people turned against it.

But now that it has passed, and Democrats stand to lose a substantial number of seats in November, Obama is making a concerted effort to increase public perception of the bill. It hasn't worked so far, so I wonder how successful it will be now.

And in reality, doesn't this seem backward. Now that he and Congress have foisted this on us, he is trying to convince us he has done us all a favor. It's not as bad as Nancy Pelosi saying, "We have to pass the bill before we will tell you what's in it," but it is along the same lines.

The funny thing is, he obviously doesn't care about public perception or else he wouldn't have passed it until he had the support of a majority of people. Instead, he only cares about saving control of Congress from what will surely be an albatross around their collective neck.

I doubt it will work - as the taxes and fees start up in the coming months, without the attendant benefits of the plan, the public will just get more and more angry.

ACORN is closing it doors.

There have been stories for a few weeks that the community organizing (and prostitution-enabling) group was struggling financially. Well, apparently the group is shutting down and trying to figure out how to pay off its debts.

This is a big win for Andrew Breitbart, James O'Keefe, Hannah Giles and everyone else who helped to expose their corruption.

Of course, the bad news is that ACORN is just one part of a vast network of corrupt liberal organizations that will continue on once this group folds.

Time to get to work bringing down the next one!

Constitutional Challenges All that Protect Us from ObamaCare Now

Thankfully, lawsuits will be filed all across the country challenging the Constitutionality of ObamaCare.

The best grounds to challenge it are, of course, that it mandates people to buy insurance.

Sadly, any average citizen cannot sue, because they will not be deemed to have "standing" to sue - there is no general taxpayer standing except for a challenge to spending that allegedly violates the Establishment Clause (which is pretty ridiculous in my book).

Instead, lawsuits will have to be filed by states or by individuals who don't have health insurance and don't want to buy it and therefore will be harmed by the mandates.

It will be interesting to see where we go from here.

Way to Stand Strong Bart!

Congressman Bart Stupak claimed to have eight pro-choice votes in his pocket. But even if it had only been the 4 that others thought he had, he would have had enough to stop ObamaCare if he hadn't caved. Needing 216 votes, Nancy Pelosi cobbled together 219 - take away the Stupak 4 and you're at 215, which is a fail.

But no, in the immortal words of Joey Tribiani - "He folded like a cheap hooker who got punched in the stomach by a fat guy with sores on his face."

Stupak could have been a hero - but he went down like all the rest.

I cannot believe he is actually pro-life; instead his actions were an attempt at political cover to show his anti-abortion constituents that he was trying to protect them. All he got was an "executive order" that cannot override the language in the Senate bill that provides federal funding for abortion.

Way to protect life, sir.

Kill the Bill - Call Your Congressman

Call your Congressman - it might be the only hope we have of stopping the government from taking over the nation's healthcare.

Speaker Pelosi and President Obama are telling wavering Congressmen this: you are going to lose in November anyway, so you might as well pass the bill and have your loss accomplish something.

But what we need to tell them is this: people are going to vote in November based almost exclusively on health care. Any Democrat that votes against it and stops it from happening is going to be a hero to the people and will win re-election, even in a Republican district. The Congressmen that are afraid of losing their jobs will only keep them if they prevent Obamacare from happening.

Barbara Boxer in Dead Heat

Senator Barbara Boxer (D - Michigan of the West) is facing a difficult challenge in her search for a 4th term in the Senate.

A new Field Poll shows her losing by a point to former Representative Tom Campbell and up a point on former HP CEO Carly Fiorina.

The poll also shows that Campbell has a 26-22 lead over Fiorina for the Republican nomination, with 40 undecided.

Boxer has a 51% unfavorable rating, which is a death knell for any politician seeking reelection.

If she is to lose, it gets Republicans one difficult step closer to reclaiming control of the Senate. Republicans will likely gain seats in North Dakota (open), Delaware (open), Indiana (open), Arkansas (Lincoln), Nevada (Reid). They have a chance for further pickups in Colorado (Bennett) and Pennsylvania (Specter). That gets them to seven. Then they need three more difficult seats out of a group of California, Wisconsin (Feingold - likely to lose if Tommy Thompson enters the race), Illinois (open), New York (Gillenbrand - who would lose to Pataki) and Washington (Murray).

So, it's possible, but will be difficult. However, if Scott Brown can do it, why not the others?

Obama Delays Asia Trip

President Obama has delayed his upcoming trip to Asia.

Is he doing it because he plans to have a bill to sign on Monday?

Or is it because, as MSNBC suggests, he is desperately trying to rally enough support to get 216 votes in the House?

It's a good sign if it's the latter, because that indicates that Pelosi has been unable to do the work herself.

But one has to wonder what sort of tactics President Obama will use to rally that support. After the Louisiana Purchase, Cornhusker Kickback and others, I think we get a sense of what will be happening in Washington the next few days.

As Dennis Kneale says over at CNBC (how he got that job, I'll never know), Obama is Captain Ahab and health care reform is his white whale.

Senate Finance Committe: Who Cares?

Yes, technically, Obamacare is one step closer to fruition.

But the fact that the "bipartisan" bill that took months of negotiations only received the vote of one Republican (and not a shocking one at that) means that the same problems that have faced this reform for the past four months still exist.

The committee bill does not have a public option. So, liberals will hate it. On the floor of the Senate, they will likely add the public option. So, moderates will then hate it. It's still the same problem.

However, I don't want to downplay the importance of people remaining outspoken against this thing. We all need to continue to speak out and make sure out congresspeople know we will vote them out of office if they pass this thing. Now is not the time to get complacent.

Oh, and apparently only Republicans who support Obama have "seriousness of purpose." What an ass.

Global Cooling

Maybe people are starting to catch on finally. The Earth is not getting hotter.

Of course, I posted about this almost a year ago.

But what doesn't make any sense is why it took people 10 years to realize the planet was cooling for 10 years. Wouldn't have someone discredited the global warming crowd like two years into the cooling trend?

Actually, the global warming crown knew they were selling snake oil. That's why they replaced the term "global warming" with "global climate change."

"He Didn't Do Nothing..."

President Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize nine months into his presidency makes me think of a Saturday Night Live skit from the 80s. Julia Louis-Dreyfus' character proclaims that Winston was her favorite Ghostbuster and her confounded co host can't do anything but repeat the words, "He didn't do nothing..."

"I like Winston."
"He didn't do nothing..."
"He was great Ghostbuster!"
"He didn't do nothing..."

And that's how I feel about Obama winning - he didn't do nothing. He has said a lot of things; he's gone around the world and apologized for America's actions that past 100 years or so - he sold out Poland and the Czech Republic to make Russia happy and he kowtowed to Chavez and Ahmadenijad. How does that promote peace?

There is some positive though. At least it shows that there are some in the world who are still willing to believe in America - this vote for Obama means that he was not written off simply because he is American.

But how is it that Obama, Al Gore (what does global warming have to do with peace?) Jimmy Carter, Yasser Arafat and Mikhael Gorbechav each have a Nobel Peace Prize and Ronald Reagan doesn't? Maybe we shouldn't put too much stock into this thing.

Funding Abortion?

In his address to a joint session of Congress earlier this month, President Obama said:

And one more misunderstanding I want to clear up - under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions, and federal conscience laws will remain in place.

Joe Wilson could have shouted, "You Lie!" again at this point, but chose not to.

Today, Democrats again blocked a Republican amendment that would forbid use of federal funds for abortions.

So, is there a misunderstanding? I don't think so. Just because the bill doesn't affirmatively fund abortions, doesn't mean it won't happen. Democrats have thwarted every attempt to block them.

Obama's Confusing Afghanistan Strategy

Part of then-Candidate Obama's campaign attack against Senator John McCain was that Iraq was the bad war, which was a diversion from Afghanistan, which was the "good war".

But now, the situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating and Obama is sitting on his hands. General Stanley McChrystal told the White House that he needed more troops or the Taliban might reclaim power in that country. The Obama Administration in essence told him not to ask for more troops. In fact, his troop request has not officially hit Washington yet.

But his report on the situation was leaked to Bob Woodward of The Washington Post. I think this shows desperation on the part of someone to get the debate going on the subject, despite Obama wanting to avoid the topic.

But why does Obama want to avoid this topic? Isn't this the good war? What's the problem? Send the troops and get the job done Mr. President! Or is this going to be yet another broken campaign promise?

There must be a lot, because Obama has again reversed himself on one of the positions he and other liberals have espoused for years - that President George W. Bush wrongly held enemy combatants without trial.

Obama has now reversed himself, saying he does have authority to do such a thing and will continue to hold about 50 detainees indefinitely without trial.

This on the heels of Obama deciding to keep troops in Iraq after saying for the entire campaign that he would get them out right away. This also follows Obama's stall tactics on Gitmo, when he once claimed that he would shut the facility down by August and it remains open as October approaches, with no change in sight.

The intelligence information the President receives every day gives him a unique view on the world. There must be a lot of scary stuff out there for Obama to have reversed himself on so many issues - and adopted the practices of the left's favorite bad guy.

Punishing Joe the Congressman?

The House Democrats have decided to punish Rep. Joe Wilson for not apologizing on the House floor for yelling, "you lie!" during President Obama's speech.

Two things that strike me about this.

1) This is the same party that will let tax cheat Charlie Rangel keep his chairmanship of the committee that writes the tax code. Wilson "lacks decorum", Rangel lacks the ability to obey the law. Which is worse?

2) Why does Wilson owe House Dems an apology. If he acted improperly, it was toward Obama. He apologized to Obama. Obama accepted his apology. Why does he need to be punished further?

I think the Dems want to keep the focus on Wilson so that no one is talking about the substance of Obama's speech or the contents of the health care bills.

Wilson should not have yelled. He's not wrong, but it makes Republicans look bad. And now, he probably should apologize just so that the whole thing goes away and we can refocus on stopping ObamaCare.

I'm not saying that what Wilson did was wrong, but for the good of the party, he should not have done it.

Why We must Never Forget

In many ways, September 11, 2001 unified the people of this country like never before. People huddled together on street corners waving American flags. The Red Cross had to turn away potential donors because it couldn't store all the blood. The Fundraiser for America drew huge celebrities (Tom Petty singing "Won't Back Down" was the highlight for me) and raised a lot of money. Democrats and Republicans, Conservatives and Liberals all agreed that something must be done and that we would never forget.

President Bush said he would go after the terrorists and the countries that harbored them. Everyone agreed. He stated, you either stand with us or you stand with the terrorists - and nearly everyone stood with us. The Patriot Act passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, and the intelligence community was overhauled, allowing our government to fight terrorism in an unprecedented way.

And because of the detention center in Guantanamo Bay, the enhanced interrogation, the wiretapping, and all of the other intelligence and security measures we don't hear about, there has not been another terrorist attack on US soil in 8 years. God Bless President Bush for that.

But success has made far too many of us complacent. Some start to think that all these measures are unnecessary (or worse - counterproductive to our proper role in global society). Liberals want to do away with pretty much everything President Bush has done (ironically, President Obama did too until he got into power). This course of action would be highly dangerous and would almost certainly result in another attack.

And that is why we must never forget 9/11. The world is still far too dangerous. We cannot go back to a pre-9/11 mindset. We cannot be lulled into a false sense of security. We must always be vigilant, we must always work to prevent the next attack and we must keep up the practices that have made us safe for the last eight years. In football parlance, we can't afford to move to a prevent defense.

May God continue to bless America and keep us safe, and may we always remember September 11th.

Initial Thoughts on Obama's Speech

Obama is talking like a moderate - "people on the left think...people on the right say..." But the problem is that he didn't say much of anything new.
"Time for bickering is over"
"[Death Panels] is a lie plain and simple."
"Partisan politics spreading lies and confusion."

Basically, instead of moving to the middle and taking ideas from both sides, he just parrots everything he has said and tries to offer it as something new - but it is all the same.

We need choice and competition - but we're still not supporting buying insurance across state lines...public option is needed to increase competition.

I also think it is interesting that the reforms won't take place for four years - so he will already have won reelection by the time he manages to ruin the country!

One of my "favorite" lines:

I'm getting pretty sick of this blame Bush BS. Get over it Obama!

He did mention looking into medical malpractice reform, but I don't believe a word of it.

He also mentioned looking into savings in Medicare and Medicaid by cutting fraud. Hopefully he can save more than the million dollars he managed to cut in spending this year.

In all, he really proved that he is not listening to the American people. He is basically pushing the same agenda that he has been pushing. America doesn't want what you are selling. Stop trying to act like you want ideas from the other side and actually start to incorporate them!

I'm not sure how much this speech will help - he probably said a lot of things his base agrees with and didn't say much to convince anyone who disagrees.

White House Changing Lesson Plans

In the face of fierce criticism over President Obama's address to school children and the accompanying suggested lesson plans, the White House is revising their suggested activities.

Now students are asked to write letters to themselves about meeting their education goals, instead of writing letters about helping the teacher.

However, they are still supposed to think about what the president is "asking me to do" and think about whether the speech "makes me want to do anything" - so it's a partial fix but not much.

The White House is blaming the original language on an "honest mistake."

Obama's Address to School Children

On September 8th, President Obama is going to have the first-ever address to every student in America. K-12 - they're all going to hear Obama speak.

In addition, the President is offering up lesson plans and assignments for teachers to assist in preparing for and getting the most out of this day (K-6 here; 7-12 here).

I think there is a reason no other president in the history of the country has done such a thing - it's totally creepy. Obama will be addressing our nation's children and bringing his liberal agenda straight to this captive audience. And because children are all taught to respect the President (except for children of liberal parents respecting a Republican president...) they will listen to what he says and take it to heart.

But is this a speech on the importance of education or a call to action? Look at some of the sample questions: what is the president asking me to do? What is he challenging me to do? One of the sample assignments asks K-6 students to write a letter to themselves and describe what they can do to help the president. Not themselves, not their families or schools or even the country, but the president! The teachers are to collect the letters and then pass them back out later so the students can be "held accountable" for what they are supposed to do.

And we can all be sure that the vast majority of teachers will be pushing Obama's ideas and agendas too. Check out this great video that Michelle Malkin posted at her site:

Your "Justice" Department in Action

Federal prosecutors were ordered by the Federal Justice Department to end their investigation into alleged corruption in New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson's office .

U.S. Attorney Greg Fouratt said the ending of the investigation should not be viewed as an exoneration of Richardson and that his investigation indicated some wrongful conduct.

Remember the department and Eric ("nation of cowards") Holder also decided to drop an investigation into members of the New Black Panther Party that were charged with voter intimidation in Philadelphia during the 2008 election.

But that same "Justice" Department is going after CIA agents who unquestionably helped save America from further terrorist attacks by using enhanced interrogation methods on three known terrorists. Keep in mind that these agents were investigated in 2004 by CIA inspector John Helgerson, who declined to file charges at the time.

So, Holder closes investigations into Democrats and a radical racial group and reopens a 5-year old investigation into CIA agents who have kept our country safe. Seems Holder is much more interested in protecting terrorists than voters in Philly or the rule of law in New Mexico.

Good News, Bad News - Romney not Running

It's not much of a surprise, but former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney will not run to replace Senator Kennedy.

It's good news because it keeps him alive for the 2012 Republican nomination to replace President Obama. He currently holds a very slim lead in early poles among Republicans.

But, it's also bad news because he would have stood a strong chance of winning the seat (assuming the Democrats hold a special election like they should - a big assumption). He is still seen as a popular figure in Massachusetts and was the second-most trusted politician in the state according to a recent Rassmussen poll.

So, we'll see what happens in Massachusetts but at least we know Romney is still on target for the 2012 election.

Shameless Massachusetts Democrats

Back in 2004, when Republican Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts, the state's Democratic legislature passed a law that any senate vacancy would be filled with a special election. The Dems were afraid that John Kerry would win the election but that Mitt Romney would be able to appoint a Republican to the position. So, to protect their political interests, they changed the law to keep Republicans from picking up the seat.

Well now the Democrats are afraid of a special election following the death of Senator Kennedy. They aren't too sure the electorate will choose a Dem with the party's popularity crashing nationwide. Plus, a special election would be five months off, so the new senator will not be able to help push for Obamacare (or is it now Kennedycare?)Now that the governor is a Democrat again, they want him to get to pick again.

So, Senator Kennedy suggested changing the rules right before his death so that Gov. Deval Patrick could appoint a temporary Senator who would "promise" not to seek reelection when the seat is up.

It's a shameless and disgusting power play by the state Democratic party - flip-flopping election rules to ensure they keep control of the seat. At least when California flip-flopped between open and closed primaries, it was the voters making the decisions, not a power-hungry state political party.

Recession "Deeper and Longer than Expected"

President Obama's justification for increasing his deficit projection by $2,000,000,000,000(!!!) is that the deficit was deeper and longer than expected.

Don't panic about the new deficit numbers, says The New Republic. The recession was just worse than we thought it would be, but the new numbers are basically the same as the old numbers. This doesn't change anything.

Isn't this the same administration who told us that we were headed for another depression if we didn't pass the stimulus plan (but had a slim chance of making it through if we spent $787 billion dollars). Didn't Obama save the global economy from meltdown by telling all industrialized governments to spend more?

So, how could he have predicted a depression then, but now say that the deficit discrepancy is because the recession was worse than they thought it would be?

Either they didn't really think we were headed for depression when they rammed the "stimulus" bill through Congress or they are lying now about why they projected so poorly.

A Quick Thought on "Fundamental" Rights

There has been some talk lately about whether health care is a "fundamental right". The strange thing is that liberals claim it is - as if that buttresses the argument for universal health care.

But look back at The Constitution and the Bill of Rights and tell me what it says about fundamental rights. Basically, a fundamental right (like the right to free speech, free exercise of religion, due process of law, etc.) is something the government is not allowed to infringe (except when it is necessary to achieve a compelling government interest, but that test is not in the Constitution either).

So, if health care is a fundamental right (it is not protected by the Constitution or its Amendments so I have my doubts, but it would probably be rolled into the "privacy" right that was found in Griswold v. Connecticut and extended in Roe v. Wade), all that means is that the government is not allowed to infringe on your right to obtain health care - it does not mean that the government has to provide you with health care (any more than the government has to provide you with guns to avoid infringing your Second Amendment rights).

The only affirmative right is the Sixth Amendment right "to have the Assistance of Counsel" in a criminal case. No where in the Constitution does it say that there is a right "to have health care."

So, when a liberal tries to tell you that health care is a fundamental right, remind them that this does not support the argument for universal health care one iota.

I just heard that Senator Ted Kennedy passed away. He put up a brave fight, but sadly, the brain tumors were too much for him to overcome.

I did not agree with him on most issues, but he was a rare Senator who was willing to work in a bipartisan way (and by that I mean real bipartisanship instead of the Obama-type) to get something done.

His leadership would probably have helped in the current health care debate. He might have been able to keep Democrats from going down this insane path they are on.

I Guess I Just See Bipartisanship Differently

Obama is now apparently considering foregoing Republican support and passing health insurance reform with only Democrats.

Seems he has been "bending over backward" to gain Republican support.

Apparently, the Democrats' view of bipartisanship is to cajole people into supporting your liberal agenda.

And because Republicans refuse to support Obama's far-left goals, they aren't acting in a bipartisan way.

But I see bipartisanship as using ideas from both sides to get a plan everyone can live with (if not a plan everyone is totally happywith).

For example, Republicans want tort reform, individual tax subsidies and cross-state competition. If Democrats would allow those provisions in the bill, Republicans would be more likely to support some of the things Democrats want, like doing whatever is necessary to insure everyone. Republicans would probably never consider a public option, but that is not the only way to ensure everyone is covered (expanding Medicaid would be just as effective).

But that is not the kind of bipartisanship Obama wants. He just wants everyone to agree with him. And as long as that is his goal, he will not win on this issue. He might succeed in ramming something through, but he will forever lose public trust and the Democrats will likely be swept out of Congress in 2010.

Obama has saved the economy, says E.J. Dionne of the Washington Post.

Of course, her article is short on facts and is based on the assertion of the Prime Minister of Australia, an unabashed Obama fan.

The only coherent point she makes is that it is hard to prove you prevented something from happening. So, the claim is that if Obama (and ostensibly George W. Bush, who Dionne will not praise, though she will repeat the praise of her new favorite Australian) had not acted, we would have been in a global depression. But since he "stimulated" the economy, we avoided such a tragic fate.

Of course, one must question the veracity of these claims.

1) we will never know if we would have been in a depression without government intervention. Many economists stated way back in September 2008 that we were not headed for a depression, even if the government allowed every bank and insurance company to fail.

2) Obama's "stimulus" plan appropriated $787 billion, of which only $70 billion have been spent - if $70 billion was enough to rescue the economy, why did we need a $787 billion bill?

3) Obama claimed the deficit would be $9.3 trillion over ten years if he had done nothing, and now admits that the deficit will be just as much despite his actions.

4) Obama promised that the stimulus plan would create 4 million jobs and would keep unemployment below 8% - it is now 9.5% despite Obama's programs.

5) When Obama went to the European leaders and demanded they all increase government spending to ease the economic problems, he was flatly rejected by France, Germany, Spain, China, etc. None of them could afford it. All of those countries are now showing economic growth over the last quarter. The US, which undertook more government spending, continues to see its economy shrink.

So, what has Obama done to save the economy exactly?

Obama's Budget Reality Check

Remember a couple weeks ago when President Obama held what seemed like his 20th press conference about health care, and he pulled out this whopper:

OBAMA: “If we had done nothing, if you had the same old budget as opposed to the changes we made in our budget, you’d have a $9.3 trillion deficit over the next 10 years. Because of the changes we’ve made, it’s going to be $7.1 trillion.”

He made that statement at a time when he was trying to get health insurance reform passed before the August recess. And he wanted to make it look like his policies had shrunk the deficit so that we would not need to fear the price tag on his latest boondoggle.

Well, now Obama has finally revamped his economic outlook.
He now says that he projects a $9 trillion deficit over the next 10 years.

Phew! It's a good thing he passed the budget that he did or we would have had a $9 trillion defi...oh wait...we're going to have it anyway? So, Obama accomplished nothing with his stimulus and omnibus spending bill? Well done Mr. President! Can I vote to reelect you now?

President Obama says:
Each and every day in this country, Americans are grappling with health care premiums that are growing three times the rate of wages and insurance company policies that limit coverage and raise out-of-pocket costs. Thousands are losing their insurance coverage each day.

Without real reform, the burdens on America's families and businesses will continue to multiply. We've had a vigorous debate about health insurance reform, and rightly so. This is an issue of vital concern to every American, and I'm glad that so many are engaged.
But it also should be an honest debate, not one dominated by willful misrepresentations and outright distortions, spread by the very folks who would benefit the most by keeping things exactly as they are.

So today, I want to spend a few minutes debunking some of the more outrageous myths circulating on the internet, on cable TV, and repeated at some town halls across this country.

You are absolutely correct, Mr. President. It should be an honest debate. But you and your liberal friends are the ones engaging in willful misrepresentation and outright distortion. And instead of engaging in actual debate with conservatives and those who do not agree with your vision of reform, you and your cronies criticize Fox News, talk radio and town hall protesters. I don't know what your definition of vigorous debate is, but when you try to ram your ideas down America's throat without considering alternatives presented by the other side, that's not really debate.

Let's start with the false claim that illegal immigrants will get health insurance under reform. That's not true. Illegal immigrants would not be covered. That idea has never even been on the table.

Hmm...I wonder where people get that idea. Could it be from the fact that you claim there are "47 million uninsured" and that number includes illegal immigrants? If you are committed to insuring those 47 million people, then wouldn't illegal immigrants be covered? And you told Katie Couric that an exception might have to be made for illegal immigrant children. So, you're basically lying when you say illegal immigrants will not be covered. Now, it's true that children should not be denied medical care just because of their immigration status. And if you want to ensure all children have health insurance, just come out and say it - at least it would be honest. But saying illegal immigrants "will not be covered," is just simply untrue.

Further, though they are not specifically covered in the current legislation, they are also specifically not excluded from coverage. Democrats rejected a Republican amendment that would block illegal immigrants from applying for benefits. So, in the current language, there is no method for verifying the immigration status of an applicant for the public option. In addition, there is language that states that if one family member is eligible for benefits, the entire family (illegal immigrants and all) is eligible. So, you are either lying when you say illegal immigrants will not be covered, or you do not understand the bill.

Some are also saying that coverage for abortions would be mandated under reform. Also false. When it comes to the current ban on using tax dollars for abortions, nothing will change under reform.

If that is the case, then why did you tell Planned Parenthood that the right to an abortion is "at the heart of the plan," that you have proposed and that the public option would include coverage for all reproductive services?

Why did Robert Gibbs say that decisions on abortion coverage would be "left to experts in the field," instead of saying that abortions would not be covered?

Why have Democrats blocked Republican amendments that would specifically exclude abortions from federal coverage while also including the Lois Capps amendment that does subsidize abortions?

And as every credible person who has looked into it has said, there are no so-called "death panels" - an offensive notion to me and to the American people. These are phony claims meant to divide us.

Again, we have something that is not specifically included in the bills, but common sense says the legislation will necessarily lead to something of this ilk.

The will be government panels that make coverage decisions based on cost, taking into account the age and prognosis of the patient. You yourself stated that there will have to be a time when we decide not to give surgery but instead give a pain pill. Liberals have complained that 80 percent of healthcare costs come at the "end" of a patient's life - if your goal is to increase coverage but reduce costs, you will have to reduce such expensive care.

So yes, there will not be a "death panel" that looks at a patient's records and stamps the word "Death" on their form. But the decisions they make will deny life-saving medicine to some. And isn't that really the same thing?

And we've all heard the charge that reform will somehow bring about a government takeover of health care. I know that sounds scary to many folks. It sounds scary to me, too. But here's the thing: it's not true. I no sooner want government to get between you and your doctor than I want insurance companies to make arbitrary decisions about what medical care is best for you, as they do today. As I've said from the beginning, under the reform we seek, if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. If you like your private health insurance plan, you can keep your plan. Period.

So which is it Mr. President? Are you lying now when you say the idea "scares" you, or were you lying to the AFL-CIO when you said this was exactly what you wanted? Why is it that prominent liberals say that this bill will pave the way for a single-payer system? And why have you and Nancy Pelosi undertaken a campaign to disparage insurance companies as evil, money-grubbing entities?

Now, the source of a lot of these fears about government-run health care is confusion over what's called the public option. This is one idea among many to provide more competition and choice, especially in the many places around the country where just one insurer thoroughly dominates the marketplace. This alternative would have to operate as any other insurer, on the basis of the premiums it collects. And let me repeat - it would be just an option; those who prefer their private insurer would be under no obligation to shift to a public plan.

There are two major problems with this assertion - first that the public option will not impact private insurers; and second, that it is a good way to increase competition and choice.

The public option will lead to the destruction of private insurance carriers. You are planning to offer great coverage at a lower price with low (or no) premiums and deductibles and no exclusions for pre-existing conditions. People will flock to that plan. Employers currently are able to offer affordable insurance to employees because of the number of people in the plan. When people leave these plans to pursue the public option, the rates will necessarily raise on those that stay in the plan because "they like their plan." The costs will rise to such a point that even someone who likes their plan will not want to stick with in when they can switch to the government option and save money. As more and more people flock to the public option to save money, more and more insurance companies will go broke.

Second, the idea that private insurers "compete" with the public option is laughable. The public option does not have to make a profit or even remain solvent - the federal government will subsidize any losses. It is not subject to malpractice lawsuits, which is probably the largest reason for cost increases in private insurance companies. The public option will cap consumer price and doctor compensation - two things that would be anti-competitive violations of the Sherman Act if done by private industries.

Sure, the public option is a "competitor" in the marketplace in that it will take customers from the private companies. But if competition is truly the goal, why not allow people to buy insurance across state lines? Instead of one new "competitor" in the marketplace of each state, there will be hundreds. If you think hundreds of new competitors won't reduce prices and won't offer inexpensive programs to help insure everyone, you are crazy. It is really the only way to increase competition.

So let me stress them again: If you don't have insurance, you will finally have access to quality coverage you can afford. If you do have coverage, you will benefit from more security and more stability when it comes to your insurance. If you move, lose your job, or change jobs, you will not have to worry about losing health coverage. And we will set up tough consumer protections that will hold insurance companies accountable and stop them from exploiting you with unfair practices.
We'll prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage because of a person's medical history. They will not be able to drop your coverage if you get sick. They will not be able to water down your coverage when you need it most. They will no longer be able to place some arbitrary cap on the amount of coverage you can receive in a given year or a lifetime. We'll place a limit on how much you can be charged for out-of-pocket expenses, because no one in America should go broke because they get sick.

There are much better ways than a public option and 1000 pages of new government regulations to insure these goals.

For example, if you give individuals the same tax subsidies that corporations get, they can purchase insurance without needing to rely on the public option.

Further, the insurance industry is already subject to such onerous regulations - part of the real reason prices and costs have skyrocketed. Subjecting the industry to even more regulations, in the guise of "consumer protection" will only make the situation worse, not better.

When companies can compete across state lines, they will be forced to offer good benefits to consumers without exploiting consumers. It will be the only way to stay in business in the face of hundreds of competitors. More regulation is not the answer - allowing free competition is truly the answer.

For example, if the market shows that insurance plans with lower deductibles and premiums are doing well, more insurance companies will offer those types of plans to remain competitive. It won't take government regulation to ensure such a thing exists.

And we will require insurance companies to cover routine checkups and preventive care, like mammograms and colonoscopies. There's no reason we shouldn't be catching diseases like breast cancer and colon cancer on the front end. That makes sense, it saves lives, and it will also save money over the long-run.

Requiring insurance companies to require certain things is another factor that runs up costs. Many states have similar requirements and people end up paying for more than they use. Why would males want to pay for insurance that covers mammograms? Why would 25 year olds want to pay for colonoscopies or Alzheimers or other things that they won't begin to use for years?

Let insurance companies create programs for individual patients - certain procedures could be excluded to reduce the price. Further, the would be insurance plans that cover mammograms and colonoscopies for people who want those items covered - the market will require such a thing.

We know what a failure to act would bring: More of the same. More of the same exploding costs. More of the same diminished coverage. If we fail to act, the crisis will grow. More families will go without coverage. More businesses will be forced to drop or water down their plans.

So we can push off the day of reckoning and fail to deal with the flaws in the system, just as Washington has done, year after year, decade after decade. Or we can take steps that will provide every American family and business a measure of security and stability they lack today.

Even those "obstructionists" that are attempting to thwart your reform efforts, and those "un-American" "angry mobs" that speak out at town hall meetings agree that some changes to the system are needed. But 87% of Americans like the system we have. So why are we going to completely change the entire system to satisfy 40 million people?

We can make changes and improve the system. And there are some ideas out there that would accomplish your stated goals of cost and competition. So why not show some leadership and be the post-partisan president you promised you would be, meet with people on both sides of the issue, and find a way to bridge the differences and make some positive changes to the health insurance system?

It has never been easy, moving this nation forward. There are always those who oppose it, and those who use fear to block change. But what has always distinguished America is that when all the arguments have been heard, and all the concerns have been voiced, and the time comes to do what must be done, we rise above our differences, grasp each others' hands, and march forward as one nation and one people, some of us Democrats, some of us Republicans, all of us Americans.

And those who use fear and name-calling to promote the radical agenda they have put forward. At this point, not all arguments have been heard and not all concerns have been voiced. "The time for talk," is not over on this issue! A lot of people still have a lot to say. Instead of demonizing critics and opponents, maybe you should actually listen to what they have to say. Then we really can grasp each others' hands and get the work done.

This is our chance to march forward. I cannot promise you that the reforms we seek will be perfect or make a difference overnight. But I can promise you this: if we pass health insurance reform, we will look back many years from now and say, this was the moment we summoned what's best in each of us to make life better for all of us. This was the moment when we built a health care system worthy of the nation and the people we love. This was the moment we earned our place alongside the greatest generations. And that is what our generation of Americans is called to do right now.

If you act in a truly bipartisan way and work to improve the system without a radical overhaul and government control, this will be true. But if you insist on ramming your agenda through Congress without the support of the American people and pass a system that will completely alter the course of this country, we will look back many years from now and bemoan the loss of our Republic and the final indignant trouncing of the Constitution. It is truly up to you to decide which of these paths you want.

President Obama claims that Republicans are blocking health insurance reform to gain a political victory, not because they are opposed to government run health care on principal.

I know I must sound like a broken record here, but does this at all sound like the kind of President that Obama promised he would be during the campaign?

Instead of recognizing that Republicans (and most Americans) might have a legitimate problem with his proposal, he plays the old game of denouncing our motives (since he obviously cannot win the fight on the issues). And let me tell you, there is not a single Republican proposal in the house version of the health insurance reform bill. Why would Republicans support something they had no hand in creating and is completely opposite to everything they stand for?

Four years ago, the Los Angeles Times ran an article in which Democrats in the California legislature admitted to blocking all of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's legislative proposals (including programs they claimed to be in favor of) just to keep him from getting any positive press - they didn't want him to win reelection. I wonder what Obama would have thought of that, since he is so opposed to it now.

On the other hand, there is nothing to indicate that this is what Republicans have in mind. They have very serious problems with Obama-Pelosi-Waxman-ReidCare that do not stem from political expediency.

And of course, these types of attacks are laughable since Democrats have a supermajority in both houses of Congress and a President eager to sign whatever bill they come up with.

So yeah, blaming Republicans just seems so lame, but Obama can't help himself. What a great leader we have!

An Open Letter to President Obama

Dear Mr. President,

I am very disappointed in you. You claimed during the campaign that you would be a post-partisan President and you would end the partisan bickering in Washington. You also claim lately that your most important concern in the health insurance reform process is increased competition and lowered costs in addition to covering the "47 million" uninsured Americans (it is a misleading number of course because you include people who could afford insurance but do not want it, as well as undocumented immigrants).

However, your actions lately show that both of these assertions are untrue. Republicans and conservatives have offered many reforms that would increase coverage, increase competition and reduce costs. If these are truly your goals, and you really are post-partisan, you would embrace some of these changes.

For example, Republicans want to allow people to buy insurance across state lines. This would increase competition and probably allow more people to be covered. There is no downside. But you will not even consider such a proposal.

Further, Republicans have suggested tax subsidies for individuals and small businesses that equal what corporations get to provide health insurance to their employees. This will also lead to more coverage. Again, there is no downside.

For some reason, you will not consider these options.

Instead, you seek something that requires much more government interference and may even lead to a complete government take over of the health insurance system.

You claim not to be in favor of such a thing, though you previously stated that you were. So which is? Are you concerned with costs and coverage, or are you far more interested in a single-payer system? I have a feeling it is the latter. The scary thing is that you are trying to enact reform that will lead to a single-payer system while claiming you are not doing that.

So why not just be honest about it?

I cannot think of a single campaign promise that you have actually kept - tax cuts for 95% of Americans? Nope. End the war in Iraq? Nope. Transparency in the White House? Nope. Lobbyists not finding a job in your administration? Nope. Post-racial Presidency? Nope. Post-partisan Presidency? Nope.

Since you have failed to do all of these things that you promised, can you please just do something right and be honest about your intentions? I think you owe this country at least that much.

I still have hope that you will change the tenure of your presidency, but that hope is very quickly fading.

Robbing Peter to Pay Paul

The Cash for Clunkers program is such a huge success that GM is increasing production for the rest of the year. Yippee!

Oh wait - the government owns GM. So, the government used the cash for clunkers to incentivize people to buy cars from the government and now the government has decided to increase production. Capitalism at its best!

Don't get me wrong - it is a good thing that car companies are selling more cars. But it is a short-lived improvement. Once the clunkers money dries up (or car dealers stop accepting trade-ins because the government is not reimbursing them), the car sales will dry up too.

Or worse - people are smart. They will think: why buy something now when I can stop buying and force the government to give me a cash incentive to buy? Maybe car sales next year will be worse than they would have been without the Clunkers program this year.

Buy hey, at least some of the government money is coming back to the taxpayers - government money goes to GM, GM improves, America wins - right?

Now, anyone who claims that death panels are a ridiculous notion is either fooling himself or is a liar. Government bodies deciding who is better off not getting the surgery and taking the pain killer? Sounds like a death panel to me.

In Defense of Pre-Existing Condition Exclusions

There is a huge problem with President Obama's healthcare plan that no one is talking about. In an Obama world, there would be no exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

I understand the motivation behind this ideal. It has got to be a crushing thing when your insurance carrier denies your claim because your medical condition supposedly existed prior to the insurance company covering you. It is unfortunate that such a thing happens.

But it is also a financial necessity.

Getting rid of pre-existing condition exclusions would be disastrous for the health insurance industry (hmm - isn't that really the plan of liberals after all?)

Getting rid of this exemption would be a negative incentive - it would give people an incentive not to have insurance until they are sick. Why have insurance before you get sick? There is no need.

Here's the thing - insurance companies make money by collecting premiums from people who don't use their services. This is true of health insurance, car insurance, home owners' insurance, life insurance, and any other kind of insurance you can think of. But how can an insurance company make money if the only people covered are sick? Imagine a system of car insurance where they could not deny coverage for a pre-existing automobile accident. You get in a crash, call an insurance company and get coverage to pay for the damages. Does that make sense to anyone?

But that is what we are looking at here! A system where healthy people see no need to get insurance so they wait til they are sick. How can an insurance company possibly hope to stay in business under such a system?

They couldn't of course. It's a no brainer.

So when Obama tells you that can keep your insurance if you like it, you really have to ask whether that is naivete or a flat-out lie. Insurance companies will be forced out of business because they will only be covering sick people.

I think part of the problem is that people forget exactly what "insurance" is for. It's for unexpected medical bills that you can't afford to pay. Car insurance doesn't cover a new transmission, it covers accidents and theft; home owners' insurance doesn't cover a new coat of paint, it covers fires and floods; health insurance shouldn't cover checkups and routine medical procedures, it should cover severe injuries and catastrophic illness.

But in an Obama world, none of this would be true. Insurance companies need to be destroyed because they are evil money grubbers (I can't believe they have the audacity to actually make a profit!). And getting rid of pre-existing condition exclusions in a sneaky way to do it.

Obama's Miscalculation

President Obama pushed the health care reform debate because he miscalculated the importance of his popularity and misinterpreted his own political capital.

He was elected with good numbers and had a high approval rating right out of the gate. And he believed he was elected to do all of the crazy liberal things he wants to do. In truth, he was elected because he was supposed to be post-partisan and a new kind of politician. But he obviously was not who he said he was. He has constantly picked on Republicans, conservatives, Fox News, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh. But I digress.

Obama was NOT elected to govern as a tax and spend liberal or to greatly increase the size of the federal government as well as the deficit and the debt.

But Obama (or should I say Rahm Emmanuel, the one really running the country?) completely miscalculated.

He pushed through a "stimulus" bill that no one read, claiming that it would create 4 million jobs. Of course that hasn't happened.

He then moved on to tax and cap (getting it through the House) and health care. And of course, we all know how the health care debate has gone.

Obama has used all of his political capital on this one issue. And it was totally unnecessary.

Obama could have waited. The economy is going to recover eventually. Not because of the stimulus bill ($700 billion of which has not been spent), but just by not doing anything. But when that day comes, he could have taken credit (whether deserved or not) and made America confident in his ability to run the country. At that point, he could have attempted to gain passage of his signature item at a point when America trusts him.

But at this point, the stimulus has failed to work so people are already hesitant. And then he tried to push through the health care within a ridiculous time schedule - the failure of which has made him look bad. And now that people are starting to find out what is in it, they are really speaking out against it.

Obama brought all of his troubles on himself. He misunderstood what he was really elected to do and he also has a tremendous ego. He thought he could do what he wanted with impunity. Now he knows otherwise. The question is what he does with this lesson if and when he learns it. I think he has too much ego to change he tack, but maybe he is a smart enough politician to shift with the winds and try to actually give the American people what they want.

At least it gave us something else to talk about for the next two weeks.

Whole Foods Should be Praised, Not Boycotted

I have to admit - I don't regularly shop at Whole Foods Market...I never got into the whole "organic" or "health food" crazes - it seems like a little to hippie for me.

But Whole Foods market has a great health insurance system that could be a model for all other companies and the federal government.

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey recently wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal explaining changes he would make in the health care system and used his company as an example. His ideals don't include a public option or anything else to get liberals excited, but they are pretty common sense ideas - and ones every rational person should be able to agree with.

But liberals don't like people who say things they disagree with. So some liberal geniuses have decided to boycott Whole Foods Markets.

The Daily Kos writer says only one intelligent thing (about consumer power - a wildly underused power BTW) but the rest of the post and the comments are sadly ill-informed. Perhaps they do not realize that Whole Foods health care costs are very low and that a huge majority of employees are happy with the plan.

For a great article about the plan and its benefits, see John Stossel's piece written almost two years ago. If we had gone with a plan like this two years ago, the country would be in a lot better shape.

But all liberals see is a program without a public option and a CEO who doesn't support a government takeover of health care and so they boycott. And they are supposed to be the open-minded party. Can't they see something successful and take a lesson from it? I guess not.

P.S. As Glenn Beck says in his book Common Sense - if you know you are right, you welcome debate, because you know you will win it. Why are liberals so afraid of this debate?

Obama Backs Away from Backing Away

So, perhaps Obama is still pushing for the public option after all. Or he is OK without it. Or he doesn't know what he wants. Or he knows what he wants but doesn't know how to explain it. Or all of the above.

He claims that he is still very much in favor of the public option, but then says that Kathleen Sebelius did not misspeak when saying that it is not an essential element of the health care bill. How do we reconcile the two?

And does it even matter what Obama wants? If Senator Conrad is correct, there will never be enough votes for the public option in the Senate. Why spend so much political capital on something that won't happen?

That's probably why he is publicly downplaying it. If he doesn't get it, he can say that it was never that important anyway, and so it's not that much of a setback.

But anyone who is paying attention knows how much the public option means to liberals, so it will be interesting to see how Obama fares within his own party if he doesn't make it happen.

Obama Abandoning the Public Option?

Senator Kent Conrad stated on Fox News Sunday that the public option is all but dead in the Senate. At the same time, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated that the public option was not "the essential element" of President Obama's health care plan. Obama even seemed to downplay the hotly contested issue during a town hall meeting in Colorado, suggesting it was only a sliver of the overall package.

Perhaps all this downplay is in anticipation of removing the public option from the table. Obama in essence says, "hey, its not the big a deal - we're still doing a lot of reform even without the public option." He claims that cost reduction and public choice are more important to him than anything.

But this argument isn't going to fly with liberals, who have been planning on the public option as a gateway to universal, government-run health care. Some have said that they won't support a bill that doesn't have the public option.

And so Obama attempts to appease them too with a statement from Linda Douglass, communications director for the White House Office of Health Reform, who states that Obama still considers the public option as the best way to achieve cost reduction and consumer choice.

The question is whether Obama will allow public outcry over the specter of government run health care to change his direction. Without a public option, it will be much more likely to bring Blue Dog Democrats and Republicans on board. But abandoning it will mean turning his back on the liberal whom he has done nothing but placate during his tenure. Is Obama really able to do something that is really better for America even if it alienates liberals? If so, he might show that he has the political ability to let go of ideology and work to get something done. He might also save Democrats from significant losses in the midterm elections.

On the other hand, he might do what a lot of us expect him to do, keep pushing the public option, keep denigrating those who disagree with him, and risk losses in 2010 to get something that he totally believes in.

The next few weeks mark a very significant crossroads in Obama's presidency. The funny thing is that he placed himself here - he pushed the health care reform debate and has spent the past month defending his plan. If it sinks him and the Democratic party, he has only himself to blame.

Sarah Barracuda Resigns

One of the last things I would have expected when I woke up this morning was an announcement that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was stepping aside by the end of the month.

Of course, my immediate thought was that something terrible had happened an she was leaving office to avoid the political fallout. At least that would have been better than what Mark Sanford is doing! But I absolutely believed that her political career was over, and the once presumed Republican frontrunner for 2012 would fade away into ignominy.

But after watching the video, her crazy decision actually makes a little bit of sense.

In the past year, she has been subjected to 15 ethics complaints, every single one of them dismissed with no finding that she has done anything wrong. But in the process, the state of Alaska has spent millions of dollars investigating the complaints and the Palins have spent $500,000 of their own money in legal fees. And so, in order for Alaska to weather the recession as a state, Palin must step aside and end the madness. If Alaska is better off without her as the governor, you have to really applaud her personal courage to risk her entire political career to benefit her state.

Moreover, I now think not only that she is not ending her political career, but also, if she is going to have any chance at winning the nomination, this is the way she has to do it.

In the short time America has known her, Sarah Palin has been pigeon-holed as an out of touch, inexperienced governor of the second least populous state, with no knowledge of national or international issues.

But now, Palin can spend the next three years touring America and the world, learning about issues, meeting with leaders and making herself more known to the public at large.

She can spend time campaigning in local, statewide, and national elections for good strong conservatives. If she can spend time getting even a handful more conservatives elected to office, she will have done a huge service to this country.

On the other hand, this gives a lot of ammunition to political opponents. "She's a quitter!" they will argue. And they're not wrong. But, she's not walking away in shame, or because she can't handle the pressure. She is walking away to benefit Alaska, her party, and just maybe her country.

The real question will be - how will this move play with the public. It seems that her detractors will hate it, her supporters will understand it and then rest won't know what to think. But three years is a long time and people have short memories. Hell, Hillary Clinton promised during her Senate re-election campaign that she would not run for President. A year later, she announced her candidacy. And people forgave her.

I think people will forgive Palin too - especially if she is able to shape the public image of this move. The mainstream media will attempt to slant it in the worst way possible, and they could very well win that fight. But again, they may just be preaching to the choir - a lot of people will never like Palin, no matter what she does. If this move enables Sarah to pick up support among people undecided about her, it will have been a great move. On the other hand, its hard to imagine what else she could do to expand her base of support. We'll just have to see where all this goes in the next few months/years.

The Prisoner's Dilemma

There is a very famous game theory problem, called the Prisoner's Dilemma, that has specific application to international negotiations. Here are the basics:

Two suspects are arrested by the police. The police have insufficient evidence for a conviction, and, having separated both prisoners, visit each of them to offer the same deal. If one testifies (defects from the other) for the prosecution against the other and the other remains silent (cooperates with the other), the betrayer goes free and the silent accomplice receives the full 10-year sentence. If both remain silent, both prisoners are sentenced to only six months in jail for a minor charge. If each betrays the other, each receives a five-year sentence. Each prisoner must choose to betray the other or to remain silent. Each one is assured that the other would not know about the betrayal before the end of the investigation. How should the prisoners act?

Obama's recent foreign policy decisions remind me of the Dilemma. There is one chilling difference though. Obama has chosen to cooperate with the other side (youtube video to Iran, reduced missile defense in Alaska and Europe, pathetic response to North Korea) and has actually made his choice known to the other side before they have to make their own decisions.

The potential benefit is that any country who might want to cooperate can do so without fear of being exploited.

However, does anyone think Iran, North Korea, China or Russia has much interest in acting cooperatively? Of course not. And so the problem is that these countries, and others, know they can exploit Obama's cooperative actions without danger to themselves. In fact, they have no incentive not to exploit Obama. As Charles Krauthammer notes, Obama is attempting to the world lead by example. But is anyone else really going to follow? Maybe Biden meant he was talking about Obama with his "no one's following" bit.

Catholic Support Slipping?

Amy Sullivan of Time Magazine reports that Obama is already losing support from Catholic voters.

I said during the campaign that Catholics were fooling themselves if they believed Obama was the "real" pro-life candidate. And now they are realizing the truth.

It's a bit of buyers' remorse now. The question, of course, is the impact. Will Obama lose a huge voting bloc when it comes time for reelection (assuming the country survives that long)? Or will this all be forgotten by then? My guess is that if he continues along these lines, more Catholics will feel the same way as those at Notre Dame, who protested the President's visit.

New Global Warming Study

Hot Air reports on a new study from NASA that suggests global warming is indeed man-made, though not in the way liberals claim.

Apparently, reduction of aerosol and sulphur emissions starting in the 70's led to a reduction of particulate matter in the atmosphere that actually caused a cooling effect. Reducing emissions led to a reduction in cooling materials and a rise in the temperature, which caused higher-than-usual melting of the arctic shelf.

Talk about the law of unintended consequences.

Or, were they actually intended? Remember, back in the 70's, liberals were warning us about going into another ice age. Looks like they managed to prevent that from happening (ha ha) and got us warmed up pretty well.

The Liberal Thought Process

So, I was reading an article on the Huffington Post by Robert L. Borosage and several things jumped out at me about the way liberals think - especially about the upcoming budget.

"Fully $1.4 trillion of the largest annual "Obama" deficit -- the $1.8 billion the CBO projects for FY 2009 that ends this October -- was bequeathed to him from George Bush"

The idea is that because Obama inherited a deficit from Bush, it is OK to continue on in the deficit spending.
This is problematic for two reasons: The first is easy (and we all learned it as children) - two wrongs don't make a right. Second, Obama has significantly added onto Bush's deficit with his $787 billion "stimulus" bill, his $400 billion spending bill, Geithner's $1 trillion Public-Private Toxic Asset idea, and other spending. He didn't inherit any of that spending from Bush.

"Now as the economy verges on a depression, Republicans are indicting Obama for raising spending and deficits. This is like a gambling addict squandering the family fortune in a Las Vegas blowout and then scolding his wife for borrowing money to keep the kids in college."

Um yeah. Obama was elected to fix the problem, not make it worse. During his campaign, he claimed to have solutions. So, if he does nothing to solve the problem, yeah, he should be held accountable. He claimed that the "buck stops with him" and it rightly should. If he didn't think he could solve the mess, he should have dropped out of the race.

"Had Republican leaders any sense of decency, they would just shut up and let adults address the mess they have left."

I think it says something if you always have to resort to name calling and insults.

"The current US public debt is about 40% of our annual economic production (GDP). It's been far higher -- reaching as much as 109% of GDP coming out of World War II."

He probably doesn't realize that the debt incurred during WWII was in fighting Nazis and the Japanese (not increasing domestic entitlements). Agreed that it is necessary to spend what you have to spend to get out of a crisis and the current financial situation qualifies. But how much of Obama's $9.7 trillion debt burden is related to getting out of the financial crisis? Not most of it.

"Clinton brought it down to 33% and Bush drove it back up to about 40% even though the economy was growing. Under Obama's plans, the national debt will rise as a percentage of the economy to about 65-67%."

This one makes me laugh. He criticizes Bush for increasing the debt 7% even though the economy was growing. But then he gives Obama a pass for increasing it 25%. And guess what buddy - the projections are that the economy will be growing again in 2010. So, if Bush raises it 7% during a time when the economy is growing, it is bad. If Obama raises it 25% while the economy is growing, it is good. Be honest and just say that what Obama is doing is OK because it is spending on things you approve of (entitlements as opposed to national security).

"But what is notable about that increase is that it will leave the US carrying only about the same debt burden that Germany, France and Canada were carrying -before they began adding to it in the current economic downturn. According the analysis of the Central Intelligence Agency in 2008, Germany's public debt was at 65%, France at 66%, and Canada at 64%."

Ah, the good old "If it's good enough for France..." defense. France does a lot of things that I wouldn't want to happen in the USA. But then again, that's pretty much the difference between liberals and conservatives, right?

One more laugher:

"Richard Shelby, top Republican on the banking committee, warns Cassandra-like that Obama's budget will put the country on "the fast road to financial destruction.""

Should someone tell him that Cassandra correctly warned about the destruction of Troy? She was given the gift of prophesy but cursed so that no one would believe her.

Liberal Offensive Against Palin

It sounds like liberals are attempting to ground Sarah Palin's run for President in 2012 before it can even start.

Her opponents in Alaska have subjected her to a deluge of ethics complaints, which have cost her $500,000 in legal fees.

There is no question that liberals are threatened by Palin and everything that she stands for. But I had thought that they would leave her alone once the election was over - at least until she announced another run.

But they are doing two things here: first - exhausting her personal resources to make it harder for her to run for President. Second, making sure to muddy her name as much as possible, so that in 2012, they can claim that she had X number of ethics complaints filed against her as governor.

It's despicable and also a bit frightening. The liberal government has shown what it can do to people it doesn't like (AIG bonus tax, anyone?) and this will probably be a story that is repeated with more frequency for the next four years.

We've Always Been at War with Eastasia

Is it just me, or do you get a Nineteen Eighty-Four vibe from the Obama Administration lately?

We no longer have the War on Terror - it is now "Overseas Contingency Operations"

Acts of terrorism are now called "man-created disasters"

We can no longer use the words "terrorist" or "enemy combatant"

Andrew Breitbart (his blog here) made a great point on Sean Hannity tonight. Look at how Democrats treat political enemies compared to how they treat America's enemies. Barney Frank calls Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia a "homophobe" but we can't call someone who blows up buildings containing women and children a "terrorist"?

You look at the massive smear campaign against Rush Limbaugh and all Republicans, orchestrated by James Carville and approved by the White House and you have to think a bit about "Hate Week" from Orwell's novel - a time in which citizens are stirred up against the enemies of "The Party".

And does anyone get a "cult of personality" feel from Obama - especially when he chooses to bypass a skeptical Washington Press Corp and take his message directly to media outlets that are much more friendly?

Or am I just paranoid?

Interesting Lines from Obama's Press Conference

What I've said here in Washington is that we've got to make some tough choices. We've got to make some tough budgetary choices.

Tough budgetary choices? Since Obama seems unwilling to cut anything out of his agenda, I wonder what he is referring to. He went sky-high on his budget, including record deficits and tripling the current national debt within 10 years. So, where are the tough choices?

And I've said that we've got to start driving our deficit numbers down.

Um, how do you plan to do that when your own projections are for 7 trillion in deficits in the next 10 years? That is not driving the deficit down. And let me tell you, raising taxes into the stratosphere won't get you there either.

Now, we never expected, when we printed out our budget, that they would simply Xerox it and vote on it. We assume that it has to go through the legislative process.

This statement seems to be contradicted by the fact that he is trying to get the budget passed by the House on a single vote, without any changes.

First of all, I suspect that some of those Republican critics have a short memory, because, as I recall, I'm inheriting a $1.3 trillion deficit, annual deficit, from them. That would be point number one.

First, here's the same finger pointing and petty politics that Obama said he was going to Washington to change. Second, it is a bit dishonest to say he was inheriting a $1.3 trillion annual budget deficit. That number was the deficit for last year, which was a year of bailouts. The deficit for the previous year was around $500 billion - not great, but much lower than what Obama is going to institute. To claim a $1 trillion annual deficit per year for 10 years is reducing the deficit is so intellectually dishonest that it is embarrassing.

Both under our estimates and under the CBO estimates, both -- the most conservative estimates out there, we drive down the deficit over the first five years of our budget. The deficit is cut in half.

Again, very misleading. A deficit of $700 billion per year is still higher than anything George W Bush had in all but his last year in office. And there are no projected bailouts in that budget, which means it is nothing more than a growth in government spending. It is an increase in the deficit, not a reduction!

But it is going to be an impossible task for us to balance our budget if we're not taking on rising health care costs

Obviously, most everyone agrees for a need to reduce health care costs. But you are not going to balance the budget by instituting universal health care, which is what Obama is calling for. Revamp the health care system, yes. Government run (and funded) health care, no.

What we said was that, over the last decade, the average worker, the average family have seen their wages and incomes flat. Even in times where supposedly we were in the middle of an economic boom, as a practical matter, their incomes didn't go up.

That's actually not true. When you include benefits like health insurance payments, retirement payments and other benefits to employees (and not just straight salary), the pay for the average worker has gone up dramatically in the past 30 years.

Question: But on AIG, why did you wait -- why did you wait days to come out and express that outrage? It seems like the action is coming out of New York and the attorney general's office. It took you days to come public with Secretary Geithner and say, "Look, we're outraged." Why did it take so long?

Obama: It took us a couple of days because I like to know what I'm talking about before I speak.

The Obama Snooze-Fest

Well, that was boring.

It is pretty obvious that Obama over-corrected after he has been hammered for joking and laughing about the economy and turning his attention to other things (March Madness). But I would much rather see him making fun of the handicapped than sit through such a dull and monotonous presentation.

I have to admit that I didn't watch the whole thing. I just couldn't do it. It was so boring! And repetitive. He said the same thing over and over. Most of it was stuff he said during the campaign.

And what was the deal with the opening statement. You think that if you remove the teleprompters and replace them with a giant TV in the back of the room, no one will notice that you are still reading? Come on!

So, I basically got nothing out of it. And I doubt Obama came any closer to drumming up support for his bank-breaking budget plan.

Card-Check Dead for Now?

According to the Washington Examiner, Senator Arlen Specter will oppose cloture on card-check in the Senate today. This means that the Senate will be unable to pass the bill and that it is, at least for now, dead.

That is great news in the fight against union intimidation. However, it is likely that the issue is not over. This means that we must continue to encourage our representative to oppose this bill.

Initial Reaction to the New Giethner Plan

The New York Times and The New Republic don't seem too impressed.

However, as predicted, the stock market is reacting favorably - the Dow is up about 4% at this point. In addition, Asia markets are doing very well today based on this news.

Of course, if the plan fails to take root, these early gains are meaningless. But it is further proof of what I posted last week - investors are there and money is there. People just want to know there is a potential for things to get better.

Obama Reaches out to Former President of France

President Obama wrote a letter to Jaques Chirac, the former President of France, saying he hoped the two could work together for the next four years (at least he accepts he will be a one-term President). I speak very little French, but it sounds like Obama discussed their mutual opposition to the war in Iraq.

I wonder two things:

First, does Obama think he is going to improve our standing in the world by dealing not with current leaders of other countries, but with their predecessors? How is the going to help build a coalition to help deal with problems like Iran?

Second, how would Obama feel if current French President Nicolas Sarkozy attempted to continue working with President Bush, instead of Obama? Sarkozy was a big supporter of W.

Finally, it seems that this contradicts his earlier statement of "one president at a time" dealing with foreign affairs. However, it could also mean that he really wants to deal with only one French president, and it's not the current one. It's going to be tough to get France's help on any issue when discussing the matter with someone out of power.

Obama's Inappropriate "Gallows Humor"

President Obama did an interview with 60 minutes tonight. At one point, interviewer Steve Kroft incredulously asked Obama how he could laugh about the financial crisis, and asking him, "Are you punch-drunk?"

It's another misstep in a series of them for Obama. His obvious false "rage" about the AIG bonuses, his public undressing by Duke's Coach K, his Special Olympics gaffe... it hasn't been a good two weeks (two months) for the President.

Geithner (Finally) Unveils Toxic Asset Plan

It's not a perfect plan, but at least it's something.

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner finally announced his plan to remove toxic assets from the ledgers of banks and financial institutions.

The basis of the plan is to create a "Public-Private Investment Program"; the public being $500 billion to $1 trillion more of federal money, the private being investments by the private sector into the fund. The plan is that investors can set the proper valuation of the troubled assets and share in the risk.

It seems like a relatively simple plan, which makes one wonder why it took Geithner so long to come up with it.

The problem with the plan is that private investors could have been buying these troubled assets all along - why will they start to do it now? Theoretically, investors will buy in because they are only taking half the risk - with the government (taxpayers) taking the rest. But if the private investors stay away, the taxpayers will be left holding the entire bag of [expletive deleted] and it will probably require more than the trillion dollars of federal funding that Geithner has offered up initially.

The first question will be to see how people respond in the morning. My guess is that people will be happy to have some sort of plan, and that alone might help ease financial tensions.

Obama's Iran Misstep

President Barack Obama made a huge mistake when he offered to enter into direct talks with Iran in a Friday video addressed to that country.

Iran's response? Thanks but no thanks. They won't talk to the US until we drop our sanctions against them and stop the "hostile propaganda" (i.e. saying that they support terrorism and are developing nuclear weapons).

So, Obama tried to reach out and has now given Iran a tremendous amount of power. Obama claimed that simply agreeing to talk to these people would give them what they wanted. Most of us knew differently. And now we have Iran making demands before they will agree to talk to us. Incredible.

Well done Mr. President.

I Hope Obama's Scalpel is Sharp

During the election campaign, Candidate Obama repeatedly stated that he would go through the federal budget line-by-line, item by item, and cut wasteful spending. When John McCain suggested a spending-freeze for non-essential items, Obama bristled - saying we needed a scalpel, not an axe.

It now looks like Obama's tool of choice is a shovel, as he is prepared to pile more onto an already bloated federal budget. The new estimate: 1 trillion dollar deficits per year for the next ten years, according to the Congressional Budget Office (Obama's much more conservative estimates show only a seven trillion dollar increase in the national debt in the next decade).

Considering his lack of focus on any one matter before him at the time, I wonder how long it's going to take him to go through the budget line-by-line. On maybe, that's the campaign promise he's going to break - obviously the huge entitlement promises aren't going away, even in this economy.

A New Legal Standard?

Apparently, whether something has been sufficiently blogged and "twittered" is a new standard for deciding whether a legal question should be adjudicated. And apparently, Barack Obama's eligibility to serve as President has been so discussed. Therefore, despite a continued lack of a simple piece of hard evidence (his birth certificate, perhaps?) being produced - the issue has been twittered enough that it can no longer be the basis of a lawsuit.

Now, I believe that Obama probably is a citizen. But the fact that the question has not been answered in a way to satisfy anyone who is really asking it makes you wonder why not. It should be so simple for Obama to prove he is a citizen, but every case is basically dismissed on other grounds. It is a little weird, isn't it?

But weirder still is the judge's ruling. This has to be the first time in legal history that a judge has decided that something has been the subject of so much public discourse that the court case does not actually have to be decided based on the law. Bottom line, if you want a court to decide a matter, don't twitter about it!

When Prime Minister Gordon Brown visited the White House a couple weeks ago, he brought some very thoughtful gifts for our new President, including a pen made from wood from the sister ship of the British naval vessel whose wood makes up Obama's desk in the Oval Office. Obama in turn gave the Prime Minister a set of 25 DVDs of classic American films. Pretty lame, right? But not a big deal. Until Mr. Brown sat down for a little movie night...

Breaking: Geithner Confirms Administration Pushed for AIG Loophole

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner confirmed in a CNN interview today that the Chris Dodd added the AIG bonus loophole to the Dodd Amendment at the administration's behest.

This of course further calls into question Obama's "rage" about the bonuses. He specifically allowed them to avoid potential lawsuits.

Instead of just admitting this at the time, Obama has engaged in a very public (and harmful) charade and now that he is caught, he is trying to downplay the damage (which explains Axelrod's statement today).

Mixed Messages from Administration

David Axelrod, a senior advisor to President Obama said today that the American people aren't sitting around thinking about AIG. This of course is in direct contradiction to yesterday's Gallup poll and opposite of Obama's message of the past few days.

What is the administration doing???

During the campaign, Obama did a very good job of picking a message and sticking to it - and about 95% of the time, it was the right message, even if it was a lie (his only big slip was spending three weeks attacking Sarah Palin). What happened to that political acumen?

he has spent many weeks talking about issues other than the economy. He has spent much too much time discussing Rush Limbaugh. He has given mixed messages on the economy. And now he can't even get his position on AIG straight. The only think Obama proved he could do during the campaign was communicating and now he can't even do that right.

Capitol Hill Catfight

There has been some Democrat infighting in Washington the past two days.

In essence: Chris Dodd proposed an amendment to the stimulus bill that would limit bonuses for bailout recipients (creatively called the Dodd Amendment). In the final bill, the amendment applied to bonuses guaranteed after January 2008. The AIG bonuses were guaranteed in January 2008 so are not covered by the Dodd Amendment.

Dodd claims that the date was not included in the amendment when he wrote it and he had no idea it would protect AIG.

But considering he has gotten more money in campaign contributions from AIG than almost everyone else, you have to wonder about the veracity of his claims.

Either way, there is a lot of finger pointing going on, and none of it involves Republicans.

He was asked a bunch of hard but fair questions during his White House press briefing yesterday. He compared it to torture. Seriously? It's your job to answer the media's questions? That's torture?!?

This came a day after he took up daily press briefing time to insult former Vice President Dick Cheney. So much for a new brand of politics free from the pettiness that has plagued Washington.

This guy is a complete joke.

Who Cares About AIG Bonuses?

The Obama Administration certainly doesn't - even though it pretends to. Why should they? Sure, it it absurd to pay million dollar "retention" bonuses to people you don't retain. It seems obscene to pay bonuses at all to people who ruined the company financially, and with it - the entire global economy. The populist anger (protesters outside their offices) and the impotent "rage" of the Obama administration seems to make sense. There is something that just doesn't sit well with these bonuses.

But who cares? AIG has gotten $170 billion dollars from the government. So these bonuses make up less than a tenth of a percent of federal assistance. That is a pittance. All of the peoples' and media attention is on the wrong thing. The real question is: what happened to the other $169 billion dollars and why is the company still struggling? Why is AIG shipping that money off to foreign banks? Why did Geitner give AIG another $30 billion two weeks ago without a requirement that bonuses be cut? Since the government owns 80% of AIG and Democrats were screaming for more oversight, what is the Federal Government doing to fix the problem? The answer to all these questions and more on tonight's episode of Soap.

In truth, Obama is piling on about the bonuses because it allows him to look like he is on the side of the people. It distracts everyone from the real questions. As mentioned in a previous post, Obama is still in campaign mode (for the 2010 midterms and his own re-election) because that is all he knows how to do. Remember during the campaign when people criticized him for his lack of executive experience and he said he had plenty because he had experience leading his campaign? Apparently all you get when you elect such a person is a campaigning President - more concerned with his own flagging poll numbers than finding a solution to the economic mess.

Obama's New Tack

I'm glad President Obama is taking my advice - at least somewhat.

When I posted last week that investors are just waiting for some good news, or a real recovery plan out of Washington, he must have been paying attention.

While the administration has still failed to come up with plan, Obama has decided to bring the good news. First, his press conference on Friday in which he said his projections for the economy are optimistic. I think he used the phrase, "The economy is strong," which is ironic since he (and others) mocked John McCain for saying basically the same thing during the Presidential campaign. Then, he had Ben Bernake on "60 Minutes" saying that the recession will probably end in 2009. Finally, the White House again announced yesterday that the economy is fundamentally strong despite the current mess.

All of this upbeat talk has seen positive effects on the stock market, which was up for most of the day today (a 5th straight day of gains though it looks like it might close down a tiny bit).

The real question is whether the optimism will lead to a sustained recovery. It's doubtful. Which means Obama is going to have to come up with a plan still. However, the stock market is not an indicator of how the economy is doing, but an indicator of how people think the economy is doing. All the positive talk can have a big impact on consumer confidence, which might help lead the way out of the "mess" we are in right now. But without a real plan forward, consumer confidence will undoubtedly tumble and the current progress will just be another speed bump in the market's race to the bottom.

The Hits Just Keep on Coming

President Barack Obama's administration is about 50 days old and it has already been marred with more scandals and problems then Democrats could ever invent against President Bush. The latest two don't seem to be just a failure to pay taxes.

First, Obama's computer technology chief is on leave after the FBI raided his former office and arrested two of his former employees. Vivek Kundra owned a computer technology company and it appears that two of him employees engaged in systematic fraud against the city of Washington D.C. And now Kundra is in charge of the government's computer systems.

In addition, a 4th nominee for the Treasury Department, H. Rodgin Cohen (a bigshot New York attorney) has withdrawn after unidentified problems were found during the vetting process. The one positive for Obama - at least they found the problems during the vetting process.

Has the Obama administration done anything right yet? Judd Gregg was a good pick for treasury until Obama insulted him by taking the Census away and showed that he wouldn't actually take his advice on any economic issue. So, I guess not.

Help Stop Card Check

Legislation was introduced in both the House and Senate this week to eliminate secret ballot voting for union organizing.

The basic premise is this: currently, if employees want to unionize, they hold a secret ballot vote and if a majority vote in favor of unionization, they will be represented. Sadly for labor unions, membership is at an all-time low. So, they are pushing hard for new legislation which eliminates the secret ballot. Instead, the union only needs to get more than 50% of the employees to sign a unionization card. And since it's not a secret ballot, the union supporters and bosses will know exactly who hasn't signed. And then they can just happen to run into that person after work and say something like this, "Hey Joe, I noticed you haven't signed the union card yet. We would really like you to. I'll probably swing by your house later tonight and see if you are ready to sign yet. Oh and by the way - I know where you wife works and where you're children go to school. I'm going to have a couple of my guys watch over them to make sure nothing happens, just in case. Are you sure you're not ready to sign the card yet?"

If you think something like that won't happen, you are fooling yourself.

So, go here and sign an online petition to have the Card Check law (ironically called the Employee Free Choice Act) defeated. This law would be terrible for employees, terrible for businesses and terrible for the country.

What Citibank Tells Us

Last night, the President of Citibank distributed an internal memorandum which claimed that the troubled bank had seen profits for the first two months of the year. In response, the entire stock market went up about 6% in value.

This proves one important thing. Money is there - people are just waiting. What are they waiting for? Well, it appears that good news is one thing. Citibank just claims to be turning a profit and the market rallies.

Then when you look at the fact that the market dips every time President Obama or Tim Geithner discuss the economy without saying anything useful or reassuring, investors are also waiting for a plan - for some direction. For his first seven weeks in office, Obama has done nothing on the economy but flounder. Well, he also signed a $700 billion economic stimulus package that won't be as effective as he promised. But he has yet to put forward a substantive plan on how to rescue the economy or fix the problems that led to the mess in the first place.

He has put forward proposals on Guantanamo Bay, Embryonic stem cell research, education and trade. He has managed to engage in terrible foreign affairs. But the one issue that probably got him elected, and the one most important to all Americans - he has done nothing but wallow.

Today's market surge proves that there is still money and there are still investors. They are just waiting for something to give them hope. Isn't that what Obama was supposed to provide?

Funding Stem Cell Research

In 2001, President Bush created an executive order that seemed incredibly wise. On the issue of federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, he crafted a brilliant decision that balanced the importance of preserving life with the need for medical research - allowing federal funds for research on the 21 lines that had already been created (because the life was already destroyed), but blocking federal funds for the creation of new lines by the destruction of new embryos.

It was wise because President Bush could see that it was wrong to use the tax revenues of a person who thinks embryo destruction is murder - it is disgusting to force a person to pay for something that the feel so strongly is wrong.

But Obama doesn't get that. Even as a "Christian", he can't see the wisdom in the balance. And so, he agrees to allow federal funds to fund embryonic stem cell research.

This, despite the fact that adult stem cells have proved more promising than embryonic stem cells in curing disease. Just last year, doctor's managed to rebuild a woman's trachea with an organ made of adult stem cells. Doctors also treat leukemia and other blood disorders with adult stem cells while no treatments have been effective using embryonic stem cells.

In addition, scientists have managed to reprogram adult skin cells into insulin-producing pancreatic cells. The possible wide-ranging medical uses for this technology are astounding. Again, these are better results than have ever been produced with embryonic stem cells.

But for liberals, federal funding for embryonic stem cell research is a must-have. Why? There is already plenty of private funding for embryonic stem cell research. Why must they conscript people's money for such a cause when people don't believe in it, and it's less promising than other fields of research? Because liberals always have to prove that they have the right to destroy life in whatever manner they choose. Anything that they perceive as a threat to abortion must be stopped. Even if it is a very wise decision.

California Budget Finally Passes

After three months, the California Legislature has finally passed a budget. Abel Maldonado of Santa Maria was the One Vote that the state congress needed to pass the budget. Maldonado (the State Senate's answer to John McCain perhaps?) agreed to the budget after Democrats amended the election rules to let California voters vote on open primaries. This is probably a major coup for the state Republican party. Most other Republicans, however, held firm against a budget that included tax increases.

The best news for California is that the 12 cent increase in gasoline tax was removed from the final budget - that revenue instead coming from federal bailout money. In addition, the proposed $18 billion dollar tax hike shrank to $12.5 billion - most of it in income and sales tax increases.

The rest of the budget shortfall will come from cuts in education, health care, and welfare spending.

The real question for teachers is whether school districts will cope with budget cuts by streamlining operations and cutting wasteful spending or by firing teachers. I'm going to guess the latter.

Can this possibly be true???

Obama, in his press briefing tonight, claimed of the economic stimulus bill, "What it does not contain, however, is a single pet project, not a single earmark, and it has been stripped of the projects members of both parties found most objectionable."

Interestingly enough, the sentences seem at odds. First, he claims that there is not a single pet project or earmark. Then, he claims only the "most objectionable" have been removed.

I don't believe either of these things. The final bill (which hasn't even been written yet) will be chock full of pet projects, earmarks, and things that people in both parties find objectionable.

The real question is the political fallout that the Obama administration will face from cramming this unpopular piece of legislation down America's throat.

Obama's Motives

President Obama is undertaking a week-long media and campaigning blitz to convince voters that the government needs to pass an economic stimulus package.

Why?

The bill is already wildly unpopular, based on some reports. But, there is plenty of support in the House and Senate to pass the bill today. So, what do citizens need to do? Why do they need to support it?

Obama is not out campaigning to make the country a better place. He is out campaigning (already) for his own public opinion numbers, and for those of the new and improved Democratic super majority in Congress.

I guess he learned a lesson from President Bush, was too rarely took his case to the American people and suffered poor job approval ratings. Obama is trying to avoid the same fate.

But it is pretty amazing that Obama is already in this position after just two weeks on the job. It's because Democrats, as usual, have overreached - they went for the whole shebang in their first economic bill with a Democrat president. They offered up new spending in every Democrat-approved area, while keeping the tax cutting and actual economic stimulus to a minimum.

So, Obama is out on the trail doing damage control. The man who was supposed to bring a new era to Washington, who supposedly had such a strong mandate based on the elections (remember his comment to Congressional Republicans - "I won"), is already struggling to maintain popular support. Obama has basically begun the 2010 mid-term election campaign.

He spent practically all his time in the Senate running for President. Less than a month into his Presidency, he is already campaigning again. What is he going to do when there is nothing left to campaign for?

Obama's Post-Partisanship in Full View

President Obama had a meeting with Congressional Republicans today - they wanted to voice their concerns about the scope of his proposed stimulus package. Obama's response? "I won." Meaning - I don't have to listen to you people. I won the election and I can do what I want.

Harry Reid later seemed to echo the post-partisanship of Obama - when asked if he has any concern about Republicans blocking the stimulus bill, he flatly answered, "No."

Obama and the Congressional Democrats are feeling pretty good about themselves right now. But if they think they can get away with whatever they want, they better think again.

As House Minority Leader John Boehner asked, "How does [spending hundred of millions of dollars on contraceptives] stimulate the economy?"

I have a feeling the Republicans are going to be a vocal minority at this point and attempt to let the American people know everything that Obama is attempting to do. And if Obama and his cronies in Congress think they have carte blanche, they are very mistaken.
